Farmingdale State is a public college of applied science and technology with an

Farmingdale State College invites applications for a tenure track faculty
position in Interaction Design (IxD) at the Assistant Professor level. The IxD
program is part of the Visual Communications Department, which encourages a
culture in which students learn the value of collaboration, vision, risk-taking, discovery, entrepreneurship, passion, social responsibility, and problem-solving with innovative and creative solutions.

The successful candidate will help develop an environment that focuses on the
practical application of visual, graphically-rich, user-centered, needs-based design solutions built upon strong research and development, observation, and
prototyping. Responsibilities include an ongoing commitment to effective
teaching, college and professional service, student advisement, and research or
creative work leading to peer-reviewed publication and presentation. The ability to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty and staff in the Visual Communications department is essential. The appointee's primary function
is to develop and teach core Interaction Design courses such as Prototyping
Tools, Typography for Interaction, Design for Social Change, User Experience,
User Interaction, Design and Play Mechanics, and Information Architecture. The
ability to teach graphic design and digital media related courses are a definite plus.

All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. The
successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence
in teaching. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their
area of academic specialty resulting in peer-reviewed publications and presentation, both of which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College. The service component of the workload includes
student advisement as well as active participation on departmental, school and
college-wide committees. The faculty member may be expected to teach in
multiple formats including hybrid, online and traditional face-to-face classes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Terminal degree (MFA, MDes, DDes, or Ph.D.) in Interaction Design, Interactive Media, Graphic Design (with significant experience in interaction design) or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. Individuals in the final stages of their degree (ABD, completing MFA/MDes portfolio reviews) that can substantiate degree completion by date of appointment will be considered. Successful candidates will exhibit the proven ability to develop original creative work, which shows a mastery of interaction design as well as the processes and tools required to create it.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A combination of practice-based studio and lecture-based teaching experience at the college level is beneficial. A record of professional accomplishment. Ongoing creative and/or research activities that are pertinent to the field of interaction design.
